Train derails in southern Illinois, 19 coal cars overturned

WEST FRANKFORT, Ill. – Public safety officials in Franklin County are working to clear a train derailment.
A Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railway train carrying coal derailed near the Mitchell Lake area off of Yellowbanks Road around 1:30pm . A total of 19 cars detailed during the incident.
Officials quickly determined there was no threat to public safety, as the train was carrying only coal.

BNSF Railroad, in cooperation with Union Pacific Railroad, will remain on scene until the wreckage has been removed and train service restored.

Officials caution local residents to be mindful of railroad equipment operating in the area.

Officials from Franklin County Emergency Management Agency, West Frankfort Fire Department, and Franklin County Sheriff’s Office responded to the incident.
